What Grows Together Goes Together: Plant Chicago Farmer's Market

Ever think to yourself, “I want to explore more of Chicago,” but then end up in the same neighborhoods weekend after weekend? Well, the Farmers Market at The Plant in the Back of the Yards neighborhood is the perfect excuse to try something new.

The Market

Hosted at The Plant, a collaborative community of food businesses in Chicago’s Back of the Yards, the Farmers Market is held the first Saturday of every month from 11am – 3pm. Orchestrated by Plant Chicago, a non-profit focused on promoting circular economies, the market features a great mix of Chicago food favorites like Pleasant House Pizza and Four Letter Word Coffee, local produce from Faith’s Farm and Urban Canopy, delectables like Tuanis Chocolate and Posh Nosh, as well as boutique local handicrafts.

Held outdoors during the warmer months, have no fear the market continues through the colder months inside at Whiner Beer’s Tap Room, where you can have a beer, eat a fresh tamale, pick up a gift for a friend, and compost any rubbish you accumulate along the way.

Feeling extra adventurous?! There are weekly volunteer opportunities at The Plant doing everything from aquaponics to actually helping the artisans set up this very Farmers Market. It’s a great way to get some exercise and meet some up-and-coming local makers. If interested, Plant Chicago hosts regular volunteer orientations. Feel free to reach out directly to learn when the next one is being held. - JT
